The Modern GCSE Reform

The major modern revamp of GCSE exams in England began rolling out in September 2015, with the first reformed courses taught then and fully examined by 2017 and 2018.

Key Changes in the Reform

  • 9 to 1 Grading Scale: Replaced the traditional A* to G grades.
  • End-of-Course Exams: Removed modular exams and coursework/controlled assessments for most subjects, shifting to linear two-year courses with all exams at the end.

Current GCSE exams in England use a 9-1 numerical grading scale, with 9 as the highest grade and 1 as the lowest.

Grading and Pass Marks

Top Grades

9 - 7
Equivalent to old A*/A grades — the highest level of achievement.

Strong Pass

5
Signifies a higher level of achievement, often required by sixth forms and colleges.

Standard Pass

4
Considered a basic level of competence, roughly equivalent to the bottom of an old grade C.

Fail

3 – 1
Marks below a 4 — students typically must re-sit English and Maths if in full-time education.

U

Ungraded

Represents a complete failure.

Structure and Assessment

  • Terminal Exams: Assessment happens mainly through exams at the end of Year 11, with coursework or practical components limited to specific subjects like art or drama.
  • Tiered Papers: Many subjects (like mathematics) offer Foundation and Higher tiers, capping the maximum attainable grade on foundation papers.

Grade Boundaries: Exam boards set boundaries after the papers are marked, adjusting them based on national cohort performance and overall paper difficulty.
